*We regret to report that our good friend Mardi Wolfson passed away on June 6, 2009. As she wished, her trust will continue to help the gravely ill and their pets.*
On October 12, 2007, Mardi experienced the feeling of a band like tightness around her right foot.
She was taken (kicking and screaming) to the hospital in Valdosta, where she was ultimately
mis-diagnosed as having had a stroke.
Mardi came to Atlanta to have tests at Emory University Hospital, where on October 31, 2007,
after a series of tests and a stereotactic biopsy, she was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme
(GBM), the most aggressive form of brain tumor. In November 2007, Mardi began her treatment which
included surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. She is now under the care of Duke University,
which is the most innovative center for brain cancer treatment. She is currently receiving
infusions at Kennestone Hospital in an attempt to prevent the tumor's recurrence. Her scans
have been consistently clean and she will be considered to be in full remission once she's been
cancer free for a full 17 months. She has made a remarkable recovery but her fight is not yet
over. She will continue to receive infusions as well as oral chemotherapy for a period of time
yet to be determined by her doctors.
Our hope is that with your generous donations through this trust, we can help Mardi get into
a stable living situation and reduce her stress level so that she can focus on staying well
and slowly starting back to work (as much or as little as her medical treatment schedule will allow).
Because Mardi believes in "paying it forward," her wish is that this trust will continue to help
others going through similar challenges during and following serious illness. Mardi is especially
interested in assisting seriously ill people with caring for and keeping their pets.
